On the surface, Kola Boof's latest novel "VIRGINS IN
THE BEEHIVE" appears to be about 3 beautiful young
Black women who form a hip hop singing group. 

But as one reads deeper...the book explores what Boof
calls "the secret about hurting."  Unwatered women struggling
to define and love themselves in a society that is sometimes
indifferent to the dreams and talents of black women.

"The book is erotic," says Kola Boof. "But it's also about the
special tradition that Black women have--a tradition of being on
the bottom; being invisible, even spiritual death--yet coming
back to life.  My lead character, JennaSet Jones, is a girl
with a voice so powerful it can literally rotate the planet.
But with all the success she finds, terrible things happen
to her spirit...she gets compromised and the power of
fame and innocence lead her to substance abuse and a fall
from grace.  But just when you think that's the story--it's
not the story."

People have suggested that the three women in the book are
based on Whitney Houston, Beyonce and Alicia Keys, but
Kola Boof says, "That's absolutely not true.  This book is a
work of fiction and the purpose of writing it was to tell a much
bigger story about dreams, faith and the refusal to be defeated.
After over-coming cancer in 2008, I really wanted to reach
young women who read hip hop street novels with what I feel is
good old fashioned motherwit, common sense and just raw,
unapologetic African woman story weaving.  It is a departure
for me, because it is a Pop novel.  But I pray that it will
stimulate some new thinking with the BET-era Black girls.
I also wanted the book to be really hot...and it is."
